Follow the money

By the company's own disclosure, the businesses it ranks pay it the most, via referral compensation and lead fees rather than from consumers. BestCompany states paying for a "Visit Site"/phone CTA does not change rank, and that "100% of our 'Best Rank' algorithm is powered by real consumer reviews." Since January 2024, Modernize Home Services (a QuinStreet subsidiary) is the exclusive lead-generation and paid-media arm for the site, so the monetization is concentrated in home-services advertisers.

What they do
BestCompany.com aggregates 1-5 star consumer reviews and ranks businesses across categories (debt relief, credit repair, solar, home warranty, insurance, software, and other home and financial services) using a proprietary "Best Rank" algorithm. Reviews are moderated by an in-house Integrity Team and, when solicited through its sister platform Snoball, verified against actual paying customers.
What to watch for
Watch for the lead-gen overlap: the same companies it ranks are the ones it earns referral and lead fees from, and many of those carry paid "Visit Site"/phone CTAs. The rank rests almost entirely on crowdsourced star ratings (72.5% rating, 22.5% volume, 5% responsiveness), not independent testing, so it can be thin or gameable in low-volume categories. The site says paid relationships do not affect rank, but a reader cannot reproduce or audit that from the published method.
