The two handle faucet with a side sprayer has been a mainstay of American kitchens for decades. As sink real estate becomes cluttered with other necessary items, there needed to be away to incorporate the sprayer and leave room on the sink top.

The solution to this was the pull down sprayer. A person pulls the nozzle from the spout and it remains attached to the faucet, giving in effect a sprayer. When not in use, it retracts into the spout, where it is used as normal.
How it Works
A pull down sprayer is essentially a hose attached to the nozzle of a faucet that resides inside the spout and attached to a series of weights under the sink. When the sprayer is pulled down, these weights are lifted up and when the sprayer is released these pull the nozzle back into place. Honestly, while this is in fact what happens, it is slightly more detailed. There are typically guides inside the spout that allow the hose to retract and the nozzle to return to a exact position time and time again. Also the pull down sprayer can have adjustments at the nozzle like an aerator and flow control to either increase or decrease the spray pattern. The whole point is to save space on the sink top and make using the faucet more efficient.
Correct Installation
When pull down faucets first came to market, many complained that the sprayer would not fully retract. In most cases, this was found to be a problem that resulted due to poor installation and incorrect placement of the weights. There must be ample room underneath the sink for the weight to extend to their full length. Trashcans, and other objects can impede the weights and therefore it is essential that this be checked and adjusted for when installing the faucet. This can also occur over time when objects get pushed towards the back and can get in the way of the weights. Installation is still easy, it is just that this must be taken into consideration.
